In February 2011, founding editor of Storyscape Anne Hayes sat down to chat with me at the AWP conference in Washington, D.C. At this meeting she let me know that after founding and editing the journal since 2008, she would be stepping down as editor of the journal and wanted to know if I would step in as interim editor-in-chief, to which I eagerly agreed. Six years later I met with prose editor Alyssa Songsiridej in a dingy, beloved anarchist coffee shop in West Philadelphia to have a similar conversation. Though I am sad to share the news that I have decided to step down as editor-in-chief, I’m thrilled that Alyssa agreed to take the reins.
The journal has grown from Anne’s brilliant concept to a thriving and consistently innovative project that showcases the best of both emerging and established writers pushing the boundaries of genre categories. It has been a pleasure and an honor to guide this project for the past six years. I managed to keep it going while juggling a part-time job, freelance projects, private writing coaching clients, and a new baby—all of which I think it is pretty darn amazing! At this point, I finally came to the conclusion that I had too much on my plate and I was ready to move on. Luckily, the journal has already taken on a life of its own, and I’m confident it will continue to thrive under Alyssa’s leadership.
I’m also happy to welcome a host of new editors who have joined the team: prose editors Samantha Duncan, Emma Eisenberg, and Brett Puryear, and assistant poetry editor Julia Alter. I will continue to serve as poetry editor while searching for a replacement. These editors are all accomplished writers with editorial experience and a keen eye for choosing incredible work.
As always, our journal is free to read, and runs on the tiniest of budgets, which covers our web hosting and Submittable account costs. All our editors and web designer are volunteers. Though we rarely ask for donations, since I’m heading out the door, I thought I’d ask for your support—in honor of our NINE years of publishing incredible writing, and in honor of our awesome new staff! Please donate if you’re able .
Thanks so much for reading, writing, and supporting great literature.
