Monster Psalm #13
Melissa Atkinson Mercer
when you set fire to the kitchen table (I burn too)

when you chop its leg with a butcher’s knife
(before I was lunacy I was litany)

when you wear our dead dog’s tag around your neck

when you wake into the summer dusk into a field of cows into the suicide ward of your tongue’s
      true rage

  when there is nothing
in this whole world you desire (I wake and I wail in the powerful now)

when you are a scar as wide as a ghost (welcome prophet)

when I cannot give you what I do not have
